  • Facing the Truth

       September 25, 2004

Il Foglio, an Italian newspaper just published a bunch of horrifying photos of beheadings and other murders from Iraq and Afghanistan. Why would they do this? They said it was to "to protest against the indifference, passivity, ignorance and submission with which the politicians and the media, above all in Italy, are facing up to the religious war and the clash of civilisations going on in the world."

Here's a link to some of the pictures. Please be warned that they are truly horrifying:

    Il Foglio

I couldn't agree more with the paper's decision to show all of these pictures. Yes, they're horrifying beyond belief. But that's the point. We need to be shocked. We need to get mad in order to have the resolve to defeat these evil enemies of Western civilization.

Imagine the uproar if an American paper followed their lead. Even so, I don't understand why they don't. Instead they waste their time manufacturing stories. They'd bend over backwards to expose the "truth" about Bush's National Guard service, but almost ignore the ugly truth of the inhumanity of the Islamofascists. I think it's because too many journalists honestly believe Bush is a greater threat than these fanatics.

I cannot wait until the election is over. Maybe once Bush is securely in office for another four years, our media can actually just report the news rather than hide it or slant it.

i agree with kris that the pictures need to be seen to demonstrate the brutality of these murders.

however, i have also made a conscious decision to keep this site clear of news about new kidnappings and beheadings. you'll note that we don't normally post those news stories in the links section.

the reason is that i belive that these thugs who kidnap and murder americans and make "demands" only do so because they have an audience.

they do it to get on TV, they do it because al-jazeera will air their tape if it's shocking enough. and they know that if they get on al-jazeera, western tv will pick up the story, so they'll get a mention on NBC, ABC, CNN, FOXNEWS, MS-NBC, or CBS-DNC.

this reveals an easy solution: stop airing this crap. if tv and news networks would stop carrying this crap, it would stop. if, the next time a terrorist group kidnapped a human, made political threats and then murdered that human being by beheading him, if the news media just ignored that, if they left it alone, if they refused to report it, IT WOULD STOP.

but that will never happen. instead, we have these self-serving newsmonsters that only want ratings. they only want to be watched. "look at me, look at me," they all cry out.

they set out with an agenda to shock, in order to get ratings or to influence events, then hide behind the first amendment whenever they get called out.

the media justifies their tactics by saying "we perform an important social function! we bring the people the truth!" problem is, most of the media serves no socially justifiable function at all. most of the media only wants to get the scoop, to get the hot story. most of the reporters couldnt care less about the truth of the story, instead all they care about is the shock value and the by-line.

this newspaper, running the pictures of the beheadings - this is the most truthful reporting that i've seen on the issue to date.

ideally, no papers would give these jackasses a platform by carrying their despicable acts as news.

however, since we live in a world where the media has an agenda, I'm glad that at least someone is accurately reporting the story.
