I Know How to Unite this Divided Land
So, with the re-election of President Bush, the liberal pundits insist that we must heal and unite this divided land. Although I have no idea why it's suddenly so bad that we disagree on some issues (I thought dissent was noble and patriotic-I guess that's only so if it working toward ousting Bush), but I'll play along.
I know one thing that will unite our divided nation: our shared disdain for the BCS. So, for at least the next couple of days, let's turn our attention away from politics and on to college football. It's just in time too, since only six unbeaten teams remain. Will anyone lose tomorrow (well, Auburn & Boise State won't, since they have a bye)?
#1 USC at Oregon State: I've changed my mind and I think USC won't lose this year. They'll win and remain #1 until their inevitable rematch with Cal in the national title game. The pick: USC
#2 Oklahoma at Texas A&M: My token upset pick of the week. Adrian Peterson is very, very good, but I couldn't help but notice two things last week: one, they gave up a ton of points to Oklahoma State last week and two, Oklahoma State can't tackle. If Texas A&M can actually tackle, they might very well win. The pick: Texas A&M
Minnesota at #5 Wisconsin: I might be too sick to my stomach to actually watch this game, but if I do watch I expect to see Wisconsin's dominant defensive front line smother the Gophers. Everyone thinks that all Wisconsin can do is run, but those people clearly haven't watched the Badgers. John Stocco will make some more clutch 3rd down throws and the Badgers will win. The pick: Wisconsin
Colorado State at #8 Utah: I'm sure Utah is a fine, fine team. And, I'm sure that if Texas A&M beats Oklahoma we won't ever stop hearing about how great Utah is now because they beat the Aggies earlier this season. And, if Utah wins tomorrow and Oklahoma loses, I'm sure Utah will join the growing legion of teams that leap the Badgers in the rankings. Ugh.The pick: Utah

I have to disagree on the A&M pick. That could get very ugly. |

I think the TX A&M pick is good. I like it. Regarding the polls and progressions, UW does well in the Coaches poll, which are historically more accurate. The Coaches know which teams they'd rather not play. The AP poll holds the Badgers down more, because sport writers want big scores - they sell papers better. Like the Purdue coach said, high scoring is more entertaining, but defense wins games - but sports writers dislike boring defensive games. Also, the Big Ten is in flyover country and not in a major city - not even the Illini are in Chicago, so the non-glitz factor and the low scores add much bias against all Big Ten teams, no matter how strong - then the AP is surprised when the Big Ten teams win so many Bowl Games against the media darlings. But UW is held back the most by the BCS computer polls. These have numerous biases and prejudices, all against the Big Ten, and UW. Low scoring is another factor, and UW's record LAST SEASON and their low schedule strength. Sorry for long-winded, but expect UW to gain in the polls as they win the next 3. |

Well USC, Cal, Texas, Oklahoma, and AZ State all scraped by while UW had their 3rd string practice against MN. But Tenn and Miami lost, so UW should move up 2 spots in all the computer polls, and the computer "average" as well. That alone is not enough to leap over Cal in the overall BCS ranking, (but in should leapfrog Texas over Utah in the BCS top 10), but it will close the deficit UW has (behind Cal). |

I'm not at all concerned about the computers anymore. I think that, at some point, the pollsters will realize that they have the power and they'll rank the unbeatens as they see fit. Since the polls are 2/3 of the BCS equation, that should be enough to determine who plays where. I expect Wisconsin to be ranked ahead of Cal later today and therefore I'd also expect us to move up one spot in the BCS. To be honest though, I've decided not to care about that anymore. If the Badgers go undefeated and play in the Rose Bowl, I'll be thrilled. The chance to win 4 Rose Bowls in 11 years would be incredible. |

I'm not sure if you understand how the BCS formula works. Also, all 3 teams ahead of us are unbeaten as well. |
