  • Why Do I Live Here?

       November 29, 2004

I vow to myself to not post about crazy editorials in Madison's Capital Times, but they just make it too hard to pass up. The latest is a column by Adam Benedetto, who's apparently quite active in the local Green Party. Adam is also apparently blessed with a keen arrogance and a complete lack of self-awareness.

Adam is still lamenting the fact that President Bush won re-election:

It has been several weeks now since the people who were saying, "Hope is on the way!" started asking themselves, "How could this happen again?"

Nov. 3, the day after the election, was a dark Wednesday for Madisonians.

At the tavern where I work people huddled in small corners whispering, or cried openly at the bar.

I was reminded of the final stanza of the Don McLean song where he says, "In the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried and the poets dreamed / but not a word was spoken / the church bells all were broken." It was the same kind of mood. Some music had died somewhere, and here in Madison the cold wind blowing through our winding streets was playing a tragic cover of a Bruce Springsteen song.

But, as bad as he feels, Adam can console himself with another quality he possesses, an extraordinary superiority complex:

While we Madisonians live in a separate America, take heart that it is superior to the rest of the country and that Madison is the city where the best intentions of our forefathers will make their final stand against the hatred and fear that has spread across much of North America.

People like Adam make me seriously question why I choose to live here. Even though winter isn't Madison's finest season, I think I'll have to take and post some good pictures of the city and its people to counteract all the bad things I say and show.

I live just outside of Madison and nothing that the Capital Times publishes surprises me anymore. The paper is nothing but a left-wing propoganda rag. Unfortunately, many people who subscribe the the paper have no idea that they are reading slanted news. They SHOULD know, but the average joe doesn't pay close enough attention .

Anyone resorting to the childish "we're superior" cliche' is proving the opposite.

James, if you ever move back to Wisconsin come to the Fox Cities (Appleton). Beautiful area, conservative values, and only 2 hours away from Madison and Milwaukee.

I grew up in Madison and check Madison.com to check the news. The one I can't stand is John Nichols. The sad thing is that there are a lot of conservative people I know in Madison but are so overwhelmed by the insanity that they can't be heard.

I think I could be happy with a half a week here in the summer and one football Saturday. I never used to think like that.

You live in Madison, Wisconsin and still have all those qualifications for another place to live? As far as I know, the only plus that Madison has is exits going in all directions.

Anyplace with less than 9 months of WINTER has got to be great!

No one mentioned the reasons why I said Madison is superior to the rest of the country. Here's why: there are a lot of local people here who participate in our local democracy. That's why. Our voting rates are usually over 80% while the rest of the country attracts a mere 40%. We take an interest in civic duty here and it shows in our local government. There fore I stand by my statement no matter how you want to skew it.

And by the way, the only thing worse than a Republican is a Democrat.

    PEACE

There are LOTS of places with high voting rates, for example, I believe almost all of Iowa is also over 80%. And, yes, that is great and something to be proud of. However, the last sentence of the article is "Madison is the city where the best intentions of our forefathers will make their final stand against the hatred and fear that has spread across much of North America."

The implication isn't that Madison is so superior because of high voting rates, it's that Madison is superior because it's liberal. And, it doesn't stop there. You're saying that any conservative is a conservative because of fear or hate. That's what ticks me off about so many liberals. They want to classify all conservatives as either evil or stupid. There's no place in their world for someone who's smart, compassionate, but just thinks there's a better and different way to govern.

No one even jokes that Bush is running a well thought out, let alone "smart" govt. He went to war with no plan in Iraq. As for compassionate --bombing some of the poorest people in the world, Afganistan, was not very compassionate.

Don't forget Bush's whole campaign message was based upon fear. That's a pretty grotesque way to lead a country wether you're liberal or conservative.

Our president is neither smart or compassionate but there are plenty of Republicans who are.
