  • One Dumb Rock

       February 27, 2005

So, I'm watching the Oscars and sitting through Chris Rock's opening monologue. I know it's going to be bad when he starts out talking about Fahrenheit 911. He claims he doesn't want to do any Bush-bashing. Then, he proceeds to compare Bush to a Gap clerk who's a few trillion short at the register. He likens the Iraq war to a Gap clerk declaring war over non-existant toxic tank tops at Banana Republic.

First, Rock's an idiot because everyone knows that Gap and Banana are part of the same company.

Second, Rock's a giant hypocrite because he closes his monologue with a shout out to the troops "fighting for freedom". Huh? Didn't he just spend the last 5 minutes talking about how the war in Iraq was some grand adventure schemed up by Bush and Karl Rove? Now it's a fight for freedom?

If you're going to present yourself as a left wing looney, at least have the courage of your own convictions.

Update: You know, I think Chris Rock is funny too. I've never seen his stand up routine, but I did love him in Dogma.

I don't really object to his Bush-bashing last night either. If that's all he did, I'd be annoyed and would never have written this post. After all, it's expected for comedians to rip on the President, no matter who the President is.

What irritated me so much about Rock is that, after preaching the F 911 gospel, he turned right around and shouted his "support" for the troops. It was like he was using the phrase as a get-out-of-asshattery-free card.

Of course, for all I know Rock has performed for troops in Iraq or Afghanistan or has visited troops at Bethesda or something.

I think I just have a knee-jerk reaction to Hollywood celebrities talking about politics.

Now I wish I'd watched it. I thought they were taking it down a notch by having him host but I would've enjoyed listening to that. That's excellent!

Um... When are you Republican retards ever going to respond to critiques of the actual issues at hand? Bush has presided over a complete nightmare when it comes to both the national deficit and America's credibility in the world. Yet you never respond directly to these sad truths and you defend this monkey blindly no matter how badly he hurts us all. You're simply not living in reality anymore.

Yeah, Kris, it was at exactly this point I turned off the show. After an hour of sulking, I decided to turn it back on to watch Clint win for Million$ Baby.

So what happa...? CRock introduces P. Diddy (I'd figured he'd be there, with all the movies he's made) (????), and he introduces a song by saying "With all the negative things going on in the world--"

    *CLICK* Done.

Yeah, Diddy. Having 8 million Iraqis vote in free elections really turns my stomach. Now go make your bodyguard shoot up the place--FOR BIGGIE!

Rock is further from the left than you think.

He's attacked politicians on both sides and we shouldn't take everything he says so seriously. yeah he made Bush jokes but he has ripped Clinton, Jesse Jackson and Marion Barry just as bad.

and did you catch what he said about Tim Robbins? "When he's not amazing us with his acting he's boring us with his politics"

    Give him a break.

I thought Rock was good. His Bush schtick was a bit over the top, but he started it out by saying that no way is Bush dumb. Here's a guy who got re-elected when there was a movie saying how much he sucked at his job. Very few others could keep their job under similar circumstances. I think that's Chris Rock's way of making a compliment. Rock was hard on the other side too, from his bash at Tim Robbins to saying that "Oprah is so rich, I just saw John Kerry propose to her in the parking lot."

Best of all, Rock bashed Hollywood the whole night, dissing actors, brushing off Sean Penn's self-importance, and going out to find what movies real Americans like. It was good stuff.

He probably won't be invited back, but the ratings were good (Drudge News Flash), so he has a chance.

Just because Chris Rock (or any liberal)chooses to disagree with the president does not mean he doesn't support the troops! The troops are doing a damn fine job of following orders and for that they should be praised. The president is doing a horrible job of giving those orders. Chris rock is in no way a hippocrite for bash the president and then supporting the troops.

    Chilly,

You're missing my point. It's not that Rock bashed Bush, it's that he first played into the the whole F911-War for Oil BS and then turned around and supported the troops for fighting for our freedom. Don't you see the contradiction there? Is the War all about oil or is it perhaps about something else?

oooo, *snap*! you got him there.

Rock was being far more subtle than you realize. After all, the US and Iraq were part of the same "company" for decades. Rumsfailed was over there shaking Saddam's hand right around the time he was "gassing his own people". and dont forget several US/global corporations such as Haliburton were skirting the US embargo via offshore subsidies and doing a brisk business with good ol' Saddam, making money hand over fist.

Nothing wrong with Rock's comments about Bush, after all the President also joked about looking under chairs in the Oval Office looking for weapos of mass destructions. It's so sickening, everyone always trying to protect Bush from any negative comments. He's a big boy and if he make jokes about WMD himself, he's fair game.

    Rock on, Rock!

I was a Republican for nearly 25 years before the current crop drove me (and many other thoughtful, middle-of-the-road people) out of the party. The transparent dullness and crude meanness of the original post perfectly represents the depths to which the Grand Old Party, and conservative discourse in general, have sunk into the slime.

Chris Rock is a passionate, generous, and patriotic man from a working class family. He cannot help but support our troops, because he grew up with them. He knows personally MANY of our brave service people in Iraq and elsewhere. He knows and loves them, knows their pride, love of country, and devotion to service. If you knew anything about the man, you would know how much time and energy he devotes, personally, quietly, to making their lives better. To honoring their service.

To disagree with the rationale for war IN NO WAY contradicts love and support for service people. In fact, agreeing with a false rationale for war is to BETRAY the troops.

If you don't accept that, then consider that Hitler sent millions of German youth into battle to serve a false rationale for war. Did he SUPPORT his troops?

I am disgusted with your childish simplifications. You fear to disagree honestly, openly, like an American, like a man, and choose instead to paint a most honorable man as a traitor. You convince me you don't know what any of your fine words actually mean. That you know nothing but a feeble and masturbatory heat that cannot bear observation any more than it can bear the ordinary light of day.

    Shame on you.

Bob Ciricci, if your post is aimed at Kris, you really missed the boat. Nowhere did she call Chris Rock a traitor. What she objected to was that his comedic routine was based on an interpretation of the Iraq War as being fought for non-existent weapons of mass destruction, yet in his message to the troops he claimed they were "fighting for freedom." That's it! That's all she was commenting on! She was taking him to task for his lack of consistency, not his beliefs.

I have to get this off my chest--

--I have to apologize for lashing out at P. Diddy earlier. In a moment of clarity, I realized he was just reading off cue cards. It's mighty unfair to attribute that quote to him.

It's sadly ironic--here's a guy just doing his job, STICKING TO THE SCRIPT, and got pasted for it.

I have to get something ELSE off my chest...

...if one more liberal ASSHAT says "shame" to one of my friends, I'm gonna throw a punch.

Y'know why you're HATED so lustfully? It's not the party you support, it's not always the people in the party you support...sometimes it's not even the rhetoric.

IT'S THE CONDESCENSION. Like you're scolding a child. And that is deeply insulting on many levels.

At that point, it's not about ideas, or patriotism, or even right and wrong. It's about me injuring you physically...because you've slimed me personally (or at least attempted to), and you thought you could get away with it.

That is something I will not tolerate.

And while you're throwing labels around, remember the person posting is a "passionate, generous, and patriotic man from a working class family" himself.

We Republicans are criticized for doing this in Iraq, and for doing that in Afghanistan; for not doing this in Iran or not doing that in Korea. We are damned if we do, and we are damned if we don't. To my consolation I can say this: We DO, we MOVE, we are dynamic... wether it was right or wrong, WE DO AND ACCOMPLISH THINGS!

I heard Al Gore whining, Howard Dean Screaming, John Kerry flip-flopping, Bill Clinton sweet talkin, Michael Moore manipulating, and everybody else (self called democrats) liberals doing nothing but blabbing, and blabbing, just like my neighbors dog, barking all night but hidding at the first sign of danger.

Liberals are just a big annoyance, they claim support for the troops, love for the country, concern for the environment, and at the end, is nothing else but empty words, just like the dog barking all night.

Daddy, your violent emotion IS a tantrum. It requires of any adult a restrained and compassionate response.

Hasn't anyone ever explained to you, or haven't you seen for yourself, that hatred, like violence, is ALWAYS an admission of failure, of an inability to deal with one's circumstances?

Even at my least temperate, I at least strive to limit my observations to your words and deeds, and to say nothing about you personally. Got that? I don't know what goes on in your head and I will not tell you that I do. I will only do what is reasonable and legitimate, which is to analyze your words and actions in their own terms.

I didn't attack Kris personally; I attacked her deeply flawed statements for their flaws. I have every hope and expectation that she, or you, or anyone can learn better, say better, and do better. Calling her on her egregious nonsense can only hasten the day.

You, on the other hand, call a complete stranger names and threaten violence. And, for that, you ought to be ashamed.

OK, I've held back as long as I long as I can. This whole thread has taken a turn for the stupid. I invite everyone to read the original post. A rather simple blurb on the contradictions inherent in Chris Rock's comedy. Imagine that, a comedian that contradicts themselves. And yes, regardless of your beliefs, the contradictions are there. Sorry, don't see any "crude meanness".

Daddy, reread your post. If the futility of name calling and threats are not apparent, maybe you should have someone read your posts first. This board has typically refrained from name calling and threats and it would be nice to keep it that way. Moderators, how 'bout some standards.

Bob Ciricci, don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. You accused a large portion of the country and this board of betraying our troops, while calling yourself "thoughtful, middle of the road". A personal attack if there was one. Also, I must disagree that hatred, like violence is admission of failure and an inability to deal with one's condition. Perhaps the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto should have just learned to deal with their circumstances better, huh?

OK, neither of your posts were very coherent, so let me briefly respond to what I CAN understand:

Bob--shaming someone IS attacking them personally. That's it. You and your "ideas" are not worth any more of my time.

Bro--we're on the internet. The laws of physics prevent me from following through on my so-called "threat". And calling for intervention--how much more LIBERAL can you get?

    This IS stupid.

I thought Chris Rock's analogy was nothing short of brilliant. If for the sake of argument, Rock was not aware of the ties between the GAP and Banana Republic - it is still an appropriate comparison. Consider this , a point well-made by Moore in the documentary: there are ties between Bush, Cheney, their private sector ventures and wealthy Middle Easterners - in everthing from oil to construction- not common knowledge, but still a well-established link. To further criticize Rock for pointing out the obvious, making a well-thought out analogy, and supporting the troops, is the only thing that's idiotic. There were few and far between, in agreement with the War in Vietnam, however not agreeing with the disposition of war should not prohibit one from giving support to the troops.
