  • POPE BENEDICT XVI, nee Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, is new Pope

       April 19, 2005

    Just announced...

Despite some mudslinging, Cardinal Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict.

Via The Corner, here's a homily he gave yesterday, and Michael Novak writing about it.

Update: Here's a pic of the new Pope, Benedict XVI:

why elect a guy that's going to die in a year or 2? maybe they just like holding the conclave... it's sorta like a bishop jamboree.

There's a couple of reasons why they might choose an older guy for the Pope.

    1. He may actually be in the forefront of guiding the church in the direction most Cardinals think they should be going. I'd like to think this is the reason they picked him.

    2. There may be an element of "he paid his dues" thinking going on. Of course most of the Cardinals are of advanced age so they all sort of qualify for this one.

    3. There's a lot of politics in the church. They don't call Cardinals "Princes of the Church" for nothing... Ratzinger may just be the leader of a very powerful faction.

In any event, I think their last selection of a younger man turned out to be one of the best choices in recent years. I'd rather have seen them pick a younger man like JP II, but I suspect people like him are hard to find.

    great quote:

On Monday, Ratzinger, warned the faithful about tendencies that he considered dangers to the faith: sects, ideologies like Marxism, liberalism, atheism, agnosticism and relativism — the ideology that there are no absolute truths.

"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as for certain and which has as its highest goal one's own ego and one's own desires."

Is it possible that Ratzinger will be an ally in the fight against Wahabbism in the way that John Paul II was against communism?

To me, that quote could certainly be taken as an indictment of the attitude of some that we have to be "tolerant" of the abuses of radical Islam.

According to this Newsmax article, that bastion of non-partisan reporting ;-), Ratzinger is the second-to-last pope.
Today the final two prophecies are yet to be fulfilled:

The 111th prophecy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The meaning of the olive is unclear. The Order of Saint Benedict – not St. Malachy – has claimed that this pope will come from its ranks and Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its final fight against evil.
And, (click here for ambiance) the prophecy in the article may be considered by some to have been fulfilled since he took the name Benedict.

Koneshiwa, James, I've got your back on the fight to save the wasabi. (And the nori and gari, too, for that matter.) We should probably contact the folks at Ninjaburger too.
