       April 28, 2005

Question: What age demographic is the Republican party battling for most fiercely?
    Answer: 16-24.

Question: What is the most popular TV show right now with the 16-24 demograhic?
    Answer: The OC.

Question:: What show did the President just bump off the air with his non-emergency, completely unnecessary Thursday Night press conference?
    Answer: The OC.

I personally know about a dozen kids in that age range that are currently pissed at the President.

Not a smart move, Mr. President.

    UPDATE: Drudge:

The White House learned a painful media lesson Thursday: Do not launch a press conference on the first night of May Sweeps!

CBS, NBC and FOX cut off President Bush, mid-sentence, in several time zones, after sacrificing one hour of prime.

The president was left standing on the stage as NBC rushed to Donald Trump, FOX to Paris Hilton and CBS to SURVIVOR: PALAU.

ABC and PBS stayed with talkative Bush until he left reporters in the East Room of the White House.

Sensing he was running into trouble, Bush joked, "We better finish this up, there are TV programs to show. And I want to help the economy."

    But it was too late.

    They had already pulled away.

Again, I can't stress enough how completely stupid I think it was for him to interrupt the most popular TV night of the week.

I agree. Doesn't he have people that deal with media. May sweeps is HUGE. I'll bet he cost networks MILLIONS of dollars. I wonder how much of a backlash there will be?

Oh come on, you all can't honestly believe that fictional television programs are more important then our president discussing important issues facing America today and what he plans to do to confront them?

I'm 20 years old and I think this way, and I can't be the only one. Furthermore to insinuate that some folks aren't going to vote Republican in 2006 because Bush's 2005 press conference interrupted "The O.C." is laughable.

And if that actually does come to pass with some folks I think the GOP is better off without their votes. The GOP needs the support of strong and principled votors who truly believe in it's message and take civics seriously.

Not kids who care more for TV shows then the health of the nation which gives them so much.

i don't think it's a matter of "more important" jay. for instance, i think that aids research is important, but i don't spend my free time reading up on it. i also think that the war in iraq is important, but you know what? i watched the apprentice tonight. i suppose you probably had cspan on though, right?

hey, maybe the president should have interrupted the world series, or the super bowl, to tell us about his new budget proposal. seeing as that is "more important," i gather you'd have no problem with that?

the GOP, like every political party, needs every vote it can get. to think that a party is "better off" without certain votes, now that's laughable.

On the other hand, the networks weren't *required* to show the press conference. In fact, I think ABC is the only network that showed it in its entirety (I think...I heard that reported on the radio news this morning and haven't followed up with it yet.).

So I figure there's contributory blame to be cast on the networks for preempting the relevant shows. Of course, if they didn't they'd be criticized in other quarters for showing Paris Hilton's cavalcade of crap instead of a Presidential press conference.

I think the White House press office, which already has an adversarial relationship with the press corps, didn't have to put the networks in this position. They easily could have scheduled their press conference for a more network-friendly time. There was no overwhelming need to antagonize an already hostile press and make Americans who were tuning in to watch their favorite show mad at the President from the beginning.

The Reagan & Clinton staffs would never have made a mistake like this.

I didn't mean to imply that people wouldn't vote for Republicans because Pres. Bush had a press conference on the first day of May sweeps. By backlash, I meant from the studio execs.

"the GOP, like every political party, needs every vote it can get. to think that a party is "better off" without certain votes, now that's laughable.
    "

The people you are talking about probably wouldn't vote GOP to start with, and yes I still think a stronger support base that can continue to bring in more strong minded individuals is better for the party in the long run.

As for sports I really don't care about the Super Bowl or the World Series I would rather watch paint dry.

As for news networks bowing out, It isn't as if most people who really wanted to watch the press conference wern't already watching on FOX news or CNN to start with. The White House press staff knew that TV ratings were going to be huge in the "primetime" hour so they went ahead and put the president on then so he could capitilize on it to some degree.

The press conference was redundant on many levels and I am sure many many people watched atleast the first (main) part of it before shutting it off and long before the networks cut away from it.

I still love the President, but I was pissed that the OC got bumped, too, and I'm 28.
