  • The Gitmo Cookbook

       June 15, 2005

After Representative Hunter (CA) appeared on several news programs beginning on Sunday, June 12, 2005, talking about how much we are spending to feed Gitmo detainees halal meals, James linked to an article and called it Gourmet Fare at Guantanamo.

This led to a discussion that led to the creation of a "Gitmo Cookbook". Our goal is simply to support the troops - profits go to a charity that supports them - and try to make the point that the word "torture" is itself being grossly abused when describing prisoner treatment. It's unfortunate that we have any prisoners at Gitmo, but the conditions there do not rise to the level of gulag, torture, or concentration camp.

Laura has been working non stop in gathering the recipes from the Navy and we'll be spending the next few days preparing and tasting them in family-sized portions, so we'll have those recipes in addition to the institutional-sized ones.

Although we're still in the beginning stages of testing the scaled-down recipes (for example, tonight I'll be trying Tossed Green Rice & Fish Amandine), you can already pre-order the cookbooks at gitmocookbook.com. We expect them to be available in approximately 10 weeks. Pre-ordered books cost $6.95. All profits will go to charity. We have not selected the charity yet - we have contacted the Public Affairs office at Gitmo to find out if the troops stationed at Gitmo have a preferred charity.

You can link to gitmocookbook.com on your own sites using this graphic:

Look for more news on this exciting project soon. If you're lucky, we may even post a sneak peek recipe here for all you food aficionados!

Update: Welcome to all of you coming over from Michelle Malkin's site. Take a look around!

Do you want me to test any recipes for you? I'd be happy to help.

I'm a little disappointed you're not calling it "Gitmo Gourmet." Or you could imitate our friends at New Orleans Takeout and call it "Git Mo' Grub."

I wish I had thought about Gitmo Gourmet... should have talked to you first!

If you don't get a reply from Gitmo or they don't have a prefered charity, I'd like to nominate the USO for the chosen charity.

"Gitmo Gourmet" is good, but I've seen people coming here in the last few days after searching for the "gitmo cookbook". It's not as cute, but it's already the term people are using.

That didn't take long - the first cookbook has been ordered!

I'd like to recommend the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS)(as well as its counterparts Army Emergency Relief and Air Force Aid) as the beneficiaries of the donations.

Who they are: A Non-Profit Organization who provide funds and other assistance (financial counseling, budgeting classes, newborn care) to servicemembers and their famillies. All of the financial help is in the form of no-interest loans or grants based on servicemember's need and ability to re-pay. The loans or grants are awarded for unexpected expenses and emergencies (plane ticket to fly home for funeral of immediate family member)

Who they serve: All members and all ranks of the parent service and any member of any service with help from the parent service's society as well as retirees (an Army PVT can get help from NMCRS once NMCRS has coordinated with AER).

Why them? To my knowledge, 100% of all donations go to the available relief funds since the organizations attempt to cover their operating costs from the investment revenues.

On a personal note: I have had numerous sailors working for me use NMCRS to do everything from fly home for a parent's funeral to money for food during a financial crisis.

There are lots of deserving organizations out there. I personally donate heavily to this group because I have seen them do great things and it is an immediate return to our soldiers and sailors in need.

And I hope you sell 10 million copies so we can all eat Gitmo meals.
