Last week, the "Yays" had it again. This week, we want to hear from you in the aftermath of last night's Powerball drawing. In fact, we want to hear from you twice.

| As the expression goes, the lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math. |

| agreed, laura.
in the past 5 years i've bought lottery tickets exactly twice - once was yesterday. i got my $5 worth with the mental diversion that it provided me. for some reason, my family likes to buy lottery tickets as gifts for each other when coming to visit from a long ways away. i used to say "seriously, i'd be happier if you just gave me the dollar." this sounds like a snobby or bratish thing to say, but you need to put it in context - there are some people in my family thta will spend $100 a week on lottery tickets. not joking. it really does bother me that the lottery advertises - the commercials make it seem "fun" and "hip" to play. here in DC, if you go over to southeast, where all the really poor people live, there are lottery billboards EVERYWHERE. why should DC be allowed to run a lottery, and push it on people, when if i did the same i'd be thrown in jail? it's probably more a tax on the desperate than it is on the math impaired. |
