American Idol Recap-The Top Ten Men
Last night, the women sucked. Tonight, will the men be any better?
Taylor starts the show with "Easy Like A Sunday Morning". Longtime Idol fans, do you remember when Season 1's Jim sang this? It's not a train wreck like that, but it's too mellow and boring. Taylor is supposed to be this crazy, gray-haired guy. Crazy, gray-haired guys shouldn't be singing Lionel Ritchie. That said, it was an okay performance, better than last week. A six.
PSA-Paula is already bitching at Simon. I think she's hammered. Lucky bitch.
Elliott sings some song I don't know. His mom is sick, so we should vote for him. I don't really know what Elliott's ethnicity is, but it occurs to me that he'd be about 10 times more attractive with a Art Garfunkelesque "Jewfro". All that said, this performance is just excellent. He was able to change up the tempo throughout the song and turned something I had never heard before into something I really enjoyed. The crowd loved it. So did Randy, who gives him a standing ovation. Even Simon thinks it was great. A solid 9. There's something about Elliott...
Ace sings "If I'm Not Made For You" by, uh, someone. Mrs. Butterworth? Aw, Ace uses a beenie as a blankey. Isn't that sweet? Ace is making some weird singing faces today. It's not very attractive. I loved him last week, but this is just boring, wussy and reminiscent of last year's A-Fed. The judges like him, but their praise seems tepid. Simon, as always, tells the truth and tells him he stunk. A 5-that's it.
Who's next? Gedeon! He's trying awful hard to emote for the camera. But when he stops worrying about that, he actually does a good job of singing "A Change is Gonna Come to Pass". He's got a nice bluesy and gospel vibe. He believes it. He's like a preacher. He's a throwback and I like him. I'm giving him a 7 tonight. Simon likes him too, so I feel validated.
Kevin "I'm still here?" Covais bleats his way through "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". I think there were some goats in the grapevine. Parents of America, I beg you, please take the phones away from your pre-teen daughters tonight. We don't need to be subjected to another week of this subpar singing. I think people are clapping for him because they feel sorry for him. Randy thinks he can actually sing. Paula must be sharing her drugs. Paula thinks he infectious. Like the frickin' bird flu. Simon says he sucks. He's right. It's bad, really bad, it's a 2.
Sweet, little Sway is going to sing "Overjoyed" by Stevie Wonder. Predictable. Sway's voice is a little rough. He sounds tentative and scared. He does get a little bit better towards the end, but folks, I think Sway is going home tomorrow because this is just a 3.
Darling Will is here to sing Kenny Rogers' "Lady". I love Will. I love Kenny Rogers. Please let this be good. Oh my GOD, Will was 12 when Justin and Kelly were rockin' the Idol stage. That's hilarious. Will looks exactly like Peter Brady as he stands straight and still at the microphone. At least he sounds better than Peter. This is an interesting performance. Technically his voice is great and it's completely different than Rogers' version. It leaves me a little cold until Will hits the last, sweet note. Nice! Although his face was kinda creepy. The judges don't like him, but I give him a 7.
You know what would have been better? If Will had sung Styx's "Lady". That would have been an awesome shout out to Freaks & Geeks. Oh well, maybe next week.
Blechy, I mean Bucky is going to sing "Gwrarth Bwooks". I think that means Garth Brooks. Believe me, I hate to say this as much as you all hate to read it, but Bucky sounds great on "The Thunder Rolls". It's totally karaoke, but it's good karaoke. The guys are so much better than the girls this year. I still think Bucky is going home tomorrow, despite this rather excellent performance. A reluctant 7.
David's going to sing Frank Sinatra. I'm shocked. Shocked! "The Way You Look Tonight" is my favorite Sinatra song and David is kind of butchering it. The original was about the exhilaration of realizing you're in love with someone. David's version is kind of sleazy. It's more like he's leering at a stranger than celebrating a lover. I hated it and so did the judges. A 2.
Chris sings "Hemorrhage" by Fuel. I'm afraid I'm not going to like it. I'd rather Chris bring a hard rock edge to a song rather than sing harder rock songs. Two notes in and I change my mind. He's so great and it makes me sad that he needed Idol to make it. He should be the lead singer of a successful band. He might be the only Idol contestant EVER who sings with passion. Awesome. He makes me forget I'm watching a cheesy talent show. A 10. The first of the season.
My order:
1. Chris
2. Elliott
3. Gedeon
4. Will
5. Bucky (I know)
6. Taylor
7. Ace
8. Sway
9. David
10. Kevin
I predict that Sway & Bucky will be gone with the wind tomorrow.

| Taylor: C+. Boring. Get back to the soul.
Elliott: B+. Excellent vocals. Probably the best we'll see all night. He'd get an A if he had any star appeal whatsoever. Or at least made an effort. Ace: B. Good vocals. Missed the Falsetto. Who cares though? This guy has all the sex appeal of Michael Bolton. (thats not a good thing.) Gedeon: A. Great song choice. Great vocals. Great look. Good performance. He's almost more Marvin Gaye than Marvin Gaye was. Almost. Covais: D+. Below average performance. This guy is a sideshow act in the mold of William Hung. He isn't "cute," nor is he "likeable." Unfortunately, he probably gets enough votes from pre-pubescent 12 year olds to hang around for a while. Sway: B+. OK vocal, but he's no Stevie Wonder. He picked it up a bit at the end, thus earning himself a "+" to go with his "B." I don't think it is as terrible as the judges say - it's just the whole Stevie Wonder thing. You can't successfully do Stevie on this show unless you NAIL it. Will: C. I don't like his rendition of "Lady" one bit. What is he, like 13? Plus, he's weird. He's lucky I don't give him a "-" for his goonie banter. Bucky: F. Bucky says that Garth Brooks is "one of the first guys to put a little rock/drive in his country." ?!?!? Yeah, I guess Hank Jr, Waylon, DAC and the rest of the outlaws from the late 70's/early 80's learned it from freaking Garth, who was like 5 at the time. I guess that Hank Sr, who invented rock along with Elvis, doesn't know a thing about "rock." Move it on over, Bucky, and say it with me - you're a P-O-S-E-R. Go back to working at the skate park concession stand. F for effort. F for U, Poser. David: D+. A crooner isn't going to win American Idol, dumbass. What do you think, that teenage girls drive around cranking the Rat Pack? Chris: A+. Great song choice. Great Vocals. Good look for him. Great performance. This guy is a freaking star. I can't think of anything he could have done better - therefore, a "+" to go with his "A". Great job. Best: 1) Chris 2) Gedeon 3) Sway Predicted Departures: 1) David 2) Will |

| i've already had 3 people ask me why i would pick sway as #3 - he really wasn't as bad as the judges said he was. and while elliott did sing very well, the guy is painful to watch. no star appeal at all. i think that sway and elliott were pretty equal. |

| If Chris doesn't win the whole thing, it will be due to 11 year old girls.
Ace was even more gay than last week, plus his singing sucked. David must go. The other departure could be anyone other than Chris. |
| # March 1st, 2006 8:57 PM kris |
| Chris reminds me a little bit of Marty Casey from Rock Star INXS just in the sense that they were both obviously way too good for the show they were on and would actually be harmed by winning. |
| # March 1st, 2006 8:57 PM BVBigBro |
| Sway wasn't bad at all. Not exciting, but at least he can, in fact, sing. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:00 PM kris |
| recapping the men is sooo much better than writing about the women |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:04 PM BVBigBro |
| Taylor has been the most disappointing.
He needs to sing a little bit heavier stuff. Joe Cocker covered the Beatles. Greg Allman did a cover of Rain that is almost a gospel. His arrangement of Rain would be perfect for Taylor to sing. |

| agreed on taylor, bv. it's like he's just "playing it safe" right now. knowing that he is already a professional artist (he has a CD out) only adds to my disappointment. he should be kicking these kids' asses. i'm very disappointed thus far. i was his biggest fan 2 weeks ago, but won't care one bit if he is voted out tomorrow night. |

| I'm disappointed with Will. His "Bridge Over Troubled Water" in Hollywood was wonderful. I want to see that singer again.
|
| # March 1st, 2006 9:08 PM james |
| will is a goon. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:08 PM kris |
| now that we know the singers a little better, it might be about time for a "what should they sing" post soon. any ideas? |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:10 PM james |
| elliott - "without me" by eminem
ace - "killer queen" by queen |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:19 PM BVBigBro |
| Yeah, I just gave you one for Taylor. David, Ace and Kevin can sing Leaving on a Jet Plane as a trio because that's where they should all be soon.
Chris could sing Lightning Crashes, or one of several Bob Seger songs. For that country night they always do, someone should sing A Good Feeling to Know by Poco. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:23 PM kris |
| you people and your Poco
i swear to God that my siblings are the only people in the world who listen to Poco i'd like them to do "Leaving On A Jet Plane" as the medley of the week. how funny. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:33 PM james |
| who's poco?
;-) |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:37 PM BVBigBro |
| If you don't like Poco, someone could sing Chilliwack.
Four men in a rock and roll band, fly at night in the morning we land... An obscure song Chris or Bucky could do is No Time to Lose by the Tarney Spencer Band. It could easily be Southernized for Bucky or rocked up for Chris. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:45 PM BVBigBro |
| Bucky can sing Signs, for all the long haired freaky people. |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:49 PM james |
| yeah, bucky can do signs, but before the performance, they should play a little clip of bucky saying "yeah, im doing 'signs' because, man, tesla is soooo revolutionary!!!"
(in case you don't get it, tesla's version is a remake) |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:54 PM kris |
| hey BV, who sang the song "Predictable"? the only line I remember is "predictable. all i see. all i hear" |
| # March 1st, 2006 9:57 PM BVBigBro |
| JThe Kinks sang a Predictable, but it was a boring song that I don't remember. |
| # March 1st, 2006 10:07 PM kris |
| Oh, it's by The Kinks. It's still boring. |
| # March 1st, 2006 10:10 PM BVBigBro |
| Yeah, I realized that and changed it. Some early James Gang could be good for Bucky or Chris. They need to be somewhat obscure songs, that way the judges, and many listeners, have no preconceived notion of what the song should sound like. |
| # March 1st, 2006 10:16 PM maray |
| Here it is:
1. Chris 2. Gedeon 3. Taylor Must Go: 1. Chicken Little 2. Crooner 3. Sway BTW, I called to vote and the only number that was busy for a solid hour+ was Taylor. Go Figure! |
| # March 1st, 2006 10:26 PM james |
| you're really that anti-sway, maray? i used to be, but i've really come around. i like sway. i think he did a good job tonight. i think he's as good a vocalist as elliott, who simon last week called "possibly the best vocalist ever on the show." the judges were all very anti-sway, but he really wasn't that bad.
|
| # March 2nd, 2006 1:08 AM Squibbly |
| I'm with you james. I didn't think *Sway* was as bad as the judges made him out to be. I really don't think any of these people can beat *Chris* unless he has laryngitis for the rest of the competition. He was amazing. *Gedeon* was pretty good tonight too. *Elliot* was pretty good, but as the daughter of a dentist, his teeth KILL me.
I'd really love to see *Chicken Little* gone. That was just painful to watch. Ugh... he and *Davey* are the ones that I think need to go. |
| # March 2nd, 2006 8:25 AM maray |
| It's not that I am totally anti-Sway. I think it is just that I don't like his type of voice. Doesn't do anything for me. We'll see what happens tonight. |
| # March 2nd, 2006 2:40 PM OlderIdolFan |
| From the comments above, I guess I disagree with a lot of you. For my money Will has the best voice out there and leaves most of the rest in the dust. Both my wife and I thought his version of "Lady" was well sung and came across as very mature and sexy - very surprising for a 16 yo.
I like Taylor Hicks quite a bit too. Personally I think he'd be wonderful singing a Roger Miller song - and there aren't many people that could do it. Do wacka do wacka do. The worst singers were Bucky (who has no voice to speak of) and Sway (who has just a little more). I hope they both go tonight. Greg |
| # March 2nd, 2006 2:42 PM BVBigBro |
| Roger Miller would be a good choice. Something you don't hear every day. |
| # March 2nd, 2006 7:59 PM james |
| i was only 1/2 on my predictions for the men. it's a tragedy that sway had to leave before that creepy corvais kid |
