  • College Football Picks - Week Four

       September 22, 2006

This is a hard week folks. Remember that I pick with my head and root with my heart.

Wisconsin at #6 Michigan: Wisconsin has no offense. We couldn't score on San Diego State until the third quarter. Michigan, unfortunately, does have a defense. I think our only hope of winning is to shut Michigan out and return an interception for a touchdown. Seriously. That's not going to happen. It'll be close, but the pick is Michigan.

#22 Arizona State at #21 California: Cal's loss to Tennessee looks worse after the Vols lost at home to Florida last week. Why are they ranked? Oh right, because they were supposed to be good. Supposedto doesn't actually get on the field. The pick: Arizona State.

#24 Penn State at #1 Ohio State: Every team in the Big Ten has their nemesis. A nemesis isn't a rival. Rather, it's that team that no matter how good or bad either of you are, can still kick your ass. Ohio State's nemesis, for example, is Wisconsin. Unfortunately for Penn State, their nemesis is Ohio State. Even more unfortunately for them, Ohio State is really good this year. The pick: Ohio State.

Iowa State at #7 Texas: Iowa State played well against Iowa last week, but Iowa looks overrated. I think Texas is going to get better and better as the season rolls on, but even now, in week four they should roll over Iowa State. The pick: Texas. And doesn't the Big 12 just suck? That whole northern division is just a giant suckfest, which makes their championship game just a farce. I'm so glad the Big Ten has resisted the urge to schedule a championship game.

Alabama at Arkansas: In my continuing effort to correctly pick SEC games, I'll give this one a try. Alabama is lurking just outside the top 25 while Arkansas is near the bottom of the "also receiving votes" list. Arkansas got crushed by USC, but both teams beat Vanderbilt by similar margins. If you use Vandy as the yardstick, this should be a tight, exciting game. But it's in Clinton country, so the pick is: Arkansas.

I agree with all of your picks.

And I agree that the CC games are horrible. Texas would have played for (and likely lost) the National Title game in 2001 had they not lost a rematch with Colorado in the Big 12 title game.

I think Nebraska is a decent team, and Mizzou looks like they could be good, but the rest of the conference looks pathetic right now (including OU< until they figure out how to play defense).

oh, who to pick, who to pick....

i'm inclined to agree with kris' picks, but i know that there is no way in hell that she is 100% correct.

    SO, i will go:
    Michigan
    Cal
    OSU
    Texas
    Tide

these are the same people who put notre dame at #1 or #2. who cares what they think?

As a Michigan fan, I can say without hesitation that we're a tad overrated at number 6. Are we a top 10 team? Yeah, maybe. Top 15? Definitely. Top 5? No, not there yet. Not unless they go undefeated and despite what others want to say, undefeated in the Big 10 is not easy.

themandownthehall, I think you're underestimating your team. Wisconsin is probably a bit better than you think and by the end of the season this is going to look like a nice win for you guys.

Right now, I think you'd absolutely crush OSU.

So, 4 for 5 this week, although I was such a snot about Cal that I feel like being wrong about that game ruins the record.

Wow, Kris, do you just make this stuff up? OSU would beat Michigan. And even if Michigan did somehow manage to win, there would be no "crushing" of anyone. How you could say that a Michigan team that couldnt get going until the second half and turned the ball over that many times could "crush" the #1 team in the land completely escapes me. What football were you watching on Saturday? It must not have been the same football the rest of us were watching

James, maybe she was watching the vaunted Buckeyes crawl in first gear for 47 minutes against a Penn State team that would struggle to beat Northwestern. Michigan had a slight let down after thumping the Irish. It lasted a half a game. Even though the offense may not have shown up that first half, the defense did and that's where the UM/OSU game will be decided. OSU will not score more than 21 against Michigan. The question is will Michigan be able to score 3 TD's against OSU. If they do, they will win. And in the (highly) unlikely event that OSU plays as poorly as against UM as they did against Penn State, then, yes, they will be blown out.

And in the shitty big 12 north, they may have enough to go to the championship game.

Mizzou has a bunch of tough road games this year. They will have to be great just to have a good record.

    #  September 29th, 2006 2:40 PM      REV
Yeah, but you gotta watch our defence, our tight-end tandem, wide-receivers, running back...oh, and our quarter-back set some records in his FIRST game. I'm not saying the season will be a cake-walk, but Mizzou aint like it's been in recent years. And Wisconsin is a tough team too...at least it has been, haven't paid much attention to the so far this year.
