  • College Football Picks-Week 12

       November 16, 2006

The Game is finally here. Across the nation, football experts agonize over their pick. Who will win? What will the score be? Will there be a rematch? Well I don't know about you, but I sure don't want to see Wisconsin/Buffalo again! On to the picks:

#21 Maryland at #20 Boston College: The ACC has the number 14, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 25th ranked teams in the AP poll. Horseplayers know that when there's such a closely packed bunch it means that none of the bunch are awful, but none are great either. That describes the ACC perfectly and that's why it makes it so hard to pick their games. Maryland has won their last five games by a combined 13 points. That's living dangerously. I don't think they can get away with that on the road. The pick: Boston College.

Buffalo at #12 Wisconsin: The Badgers have gotten a lot of crap about playing a weak schedule. That may be, but Wisconsin has won their games. Teams like USC, Auburn, Texas & California aren't losing to great teams, they're losing to the weak sisters on their schedule. You have to give teams like Wisconsin and Rutgers credit for beating the teams they should beat. That's what good teams do. The pick: Wisconsin, but not in a huge blowout. That's not our way.

#19 Virginia Tech at #14 Wake Forest: Another ACC game. It seems like Virginia Tech has turned the corner in winning their last 4 games. I think they keep it up and tag Wake Forest with another loss and possibly knock them out of the BCS. The pick: Virginia Tech.

#17 California at #4 USC: I'm afraid that USC might actually be a little underrated. I think the Oregon State game made the team realize that they weren't good enough to win without trying. Unfortunately for the rest of college football, that means that they're trying now. Yikes! The pick: USC.

#2 Michigan at #1 Ohio State: As a Badger fan, I really want Michigan to win in a blowout because I'm holding out hope that if that did happen the Rose Bowl might consider Wisconsin instead. I also want to pick Michigan because I know James is picking Ohio State and there's no fun in agreeing. However, as soon I start thinking Michigan is going to win I'll see a clip of Lloyd Carr and I know Ohio State is going to win. The game will come down to who is better: Troy Smith or Chad Henne. I think the answer is clearly Smith. The pick: Ohio State (wow, bet you didn't see that coming themandownthehall, did you?)

No, I didn't see that coming at all :). The Game of Games is here. Wow, what a weekend. That Bo would do anything to motivate his team. (moment of silence)......... He was an icon and will be missed. One of the things about the UM-Hitler games is how clean they are. We are not talking a couple thug teams from down in Florida. Both teams win with class. No real taunting, no messing around, no cheap shots. Good clean hard hitting, tear your head off legally football. That attitude came down from Woody and Bo. Neither of them tolerated it nor have any coaches after them since the Woody/Bo influence penetrates every area of those teams. Bo will be missed as Woody was. God rest their souls. I'm sure they have the box seat above the 50 yard line. :)

    Anyway, on to the picks.

Maryland/BC. Maryland still has a chance to win the division and get to that championship game. Take MD by 7

    Buffalo/Wisc:
What a joke game. Worse than UM taking Ball St. Don't look for that to happen here. Wisconsin by 24. Wisconsin may not usually win like that, but they haven't played a team as bad as Buffalo in, well, ever. Seriously, they're almost always in ESPN's bottom 10. They can put the cheerleaders in and still win by 10.

    Va Tech/Wake Forest.
I am starting to believe in Wake. I am less than 45 minutes from their campus so I see them year after year and they usually stink. It's why I haven't picked them once. I've been wrong every time. So, I'm going to pick them this time. I hope it doesn't hex them. I like seeing teams that normally don't win, do well. Wake in a close one.

    Cal/USC:
My upset pick. Which means I have a 33% chance of being right based on my upset calls this year. Cal just lost a game they shouldn't have. They will be fired up. Cal by 7

    UM/Hitler:
Wow, where to start. I am starting to believe that my team deserves it's number 2 ranking. Looking at the top 25, I don't see a team they can't beat. Well, except maybe Hitler. I agree that Smith is the key here. If UM can hold him down some, they have a chance. (you can never stop him, which is why The Trophy is his irregardless of today)
My heart tells me UM by 50. My head tells me Hitler by 14. I'm a conservative. My head wins out. Hitler. (you have no idea how hard it is to type that).

In other games (are there any?):
    Satan over Army.
    Penn St over Mich St.
    Iowa over Minnesota
    Purdue over Indiana

    Upsets:
Bama over Auburn (that one's for Beth at bamapachyderm).
    Cal over USC
Virginia over Thugs (although I don't know if that qualifies as an upset).

I hate the end of the season. It's always the longest before the next one...

Give Bo a moment at kickoff. Enjoy the games!

#$@$*%&(~@!!! I hate Hitler. Still closer than I thought it would be.

Season's over. Nothing else matters. Hitler is the national champ, and will be the national champ of all time having beaten the #2 challenger on 3 occaisions. The bowl will be Hitler 45 whoever (doesn't matter) 3

    Have a good evening.

Under no circumstances should Florida or Notre Dame get a shot at OSU. It should be USC if they win out, Arkansas if USC loses and Arkansas wins the SEC champ game, and Michigan again if both USC and Arkansas lose again.

    #  November 19th, 2006 9:33 AM      kris
    I agree.

And, if Michigans fans all feel like themandownthehall, perhaps the Rose Bowl would like to invite a team that really wants to play in their game. Hint hint.

Notre Dame doesn't have a chance. They won't beat USC, but even if they did there's no way they make the title game ahead of Michigan. People haven't forgotten the ass whipping Michigan put on them.

Interestingly, almost everyone at the bar I was at was rooting for Michigan.

    I can't root for Michigan.

    #  November 19th, 2006 9:51 AM      kris
It was strange rooting for them over another Big Ten team. But, I've rooted for them in bowl games so it wasn't the first time.

    #  November 19th, 2006 6:12 PM      themandownthehall
You did Kris? Well thank you. You're so nice. :) I guess my feeling is that we had our shot and blew it. Yes, it was a 3 point loss, but I really didn't see a time in the game after Hitler went up 14-7 that they were in jeapordy. All game long, UM played catch up and every time they did, Smith pulled further ahead again. Everyone raved at how good it was and how UM came the closest to beating them, but I really didn't see it. The Bucks were never in danger after going up. If Smith doesn't win the Heisman, then there is something drastically wrong.

As for the championship game, I don't care who gets the game. Line them up: USC, Arkansas, Florida, Satan. Hitler will blow them out and do so badly. It won't even be close. If I had to pick who deserved it, then USC gets my vote. They beat Arkansas, Nebraska and will have beaten Satan next week. You can't get much better than that. After them, if you get down to it, the next one that deserves it is UM. Arkansas lost badly to USC, if USC doesn't get it, then Arkansas shouldn't since UM's loss was in the horse shoe to #1. That puts them ahead of the rest in my opinion.

Now, nothing, and I mean nothing, can make me cheer for Satan. So I'll be rooting for USC next week. Besides, I don't think a UM Hitler rematch would be different and I can't take 2 losses to them in one season. :)

As for a rematch, if you look at the other sports, NCAA BB, NFL, NBA, MLB, etc it is often that 1 and 2 play in a regular season and then meet again in the playoffs. Heck, in recent years, when UNC and Duke have been the top 2 in basketball, they met 3 times in a season and then had the chance to meet in a championship game. No one disputes the validity of their titles. So there isn't a taint per se if UM were to go to the championship and win, but I really couldn't say that they were better than Hitler. In that case, I would have no problem with a split title. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

All in all, it was a decent season. I mean after all, we were 7-5 last year and this year we challenged for the national title and we beat Satan. Got to love that. Any year you beat Satan has to be a good one I guess. Especially when we were their only loss to date, although, USC will pound them next week.

Monday's BCS rankings will be interesting. UM is still #2 in one poll and #3 in the other. Computers come out tomorrow. it will be interesting to see what happens. It's one year, I kind of like the chaos of the BCS. If nothing else, the BCS stuff has made for a real interesting final 2 weeks.

    Have a good week everyone.

Ok, in a common theme this year, I was wrong. The BCS standings just came out. UM stayed #2 barely over USC. I think they will move ahead if they beat Satan, but we'll see. Florida, Satan and Arkansas are too far behind to catch up.

I still can't root for Satan though. Even for another shot at Hitler. Just can't do it. Well, not yet at least. Maybe I'll change my mind this week when the depression of the loss wears off some.

    Have a good night.

    #  November 19th, 2006 6:49 PM      themandownthehall
Ok, one more thing. I just may have found my motivation to cheer for Satan over USC. Urban Meyer at Florida, when asked about a rematch between Hitler and UM, whined the following:

"If that does happen, all the [university] presidents need to get together immediately and put together a playoff system," he said. "I mean like now, January or whenever to get that done."

So a rematch would 1, put pressure for a real playoff, and 2 make another overrated SEC team squeal like a stuck pig. Hmm. Tempting. Very very tempting.

    #  November 19th, 2006 8:47 PM      kris
Heh, Florida needs to actually win the SEC before they start whining.

    #  November 19th, 2006 11:15 PM      drew
Florida needs to beat Arkansas convincingly before they talk about Glendale. And USC needs to do the same with Notre Dame.

I think Michigan is as deserving (if not much more so) than any one-loss team out there.

theman... seriously, man... how old are you? Satan? Hitler? I thought our idiot fans that can't stop saying "BlowU" and "eATMe" were juvenile.

    #  November 20th, 2006 5:06 PM      themandownthehall
Drew, I am not nearly as old as Woody Hayes when he refused to ever call Michigan by it's name. Compared to some of the things the Buckeye fans say, I think I'm pretty tame.

Juvenile? Please. It's harmless fun. But, if it grates your nerves that badly then fine, I think Michigan would not beat OHIO STATE in a rematch, but the rematch will probably happen if USC beats NOTRE DAME. And if it does, I cannot wait to hear the whiners of the SEC squeal.

    Have a good night everyone.
