  • College Football Picks - Week Five

       September 28, 2007

Finally, we get some big games this weekend. W00t!

#5 West Virginia at #18 South Florida: I read a post by a South Florida fan already whining about how if his team goes undefeated they have "no chance" of playing in the national championship game because of their preseason ranking. You know what happens when fans start bitching about stuff like that in week 5 right? He's just jinxed his team. Nice job. Not that they were going undefeated anyway. The pick: West Virginia.

Michigan State at #9 Wisconsin: The Badgers were overrated at the start of the season. Now, they're underrated. They didn't look great last week, but they were, after all, playing one of the top defenses in the nation in Iowa and were the first team to score a touchdown on them. I think the Badgers will win this game, but it'll once again be ugly. I think as long as Donovan is our QB, that's what we'll always do. He's good enough to win, but not good enough to dominate. The pick: Wisconsin.

#13 Clemson at Georgia Tech: Clemson has a history of looking great in big games and terrible in little games. I feel like this is a medium game so I have no idea what they're going to look like. Georgia Tech is, so far, hanging their hat on a victory over Notre Dame. Heh. I think they get something else to talk about as Clemson will play down to their opposition. The upset pick: Georgia Tech.

#6 California at #11 Oregon: I like Oregon, but why are they ranked so high? I think it's because of their spanking of a reeling Michigan team. Beating Michigan ain't what it used to be. Besides Michigan, Oregon has faced the likes of Houston, Fresno State and Stanford. Likewise, California has a victory over a subpar Tennessee team and Colorado State, Louisiana Tech and Arizona. I don't think we know much about either of these teams. In situations like this, I opt for the home team. The pick: Oregon.

Ok, I am a little late here, USF is beating WVU, which if you look at my picks was my prediction. WVU is very overrated. USF has played decently. I would have expected a closer game, but 21-6 in the fourth is pretty good. Finished 21-13 as I wrote below.

    Wisconsin - MSU:

Here is the story of MSU's football team year after year: Wow, look at that team. It's great. Son, not even God can defeat this team. Here's the kickoff and the ultimate hope of football begins. Wow, look at all the things we're killing. What's an Eastern Michigan? Wow, this is great. Cool, a night game. Say what's that? HOLY CRAP! AHHHHHHHHH. What's the matter? ICEBERG, DEAD AHEAD! THUD! Ok, it's just one hole. We can survive right? We've lost the forward ballast. One by one, we'll lose more until finally the season will sink to the bottom. QUICK get the life rafts! No life rafts? Do something! Where's the new QB? Can we buy a tackle? Holding, what the hell do you mean holding? We needed that game for a chance at a bowl! Get some better recruits! Fire the coach. Gentelmen, it has been an honor to play with you this season. "Nearer my God to Thee..." I'll never let you go MSU. I'll never let you go. blub, blub, blub.

The only question is what is that icebergs name that eventually destroys the season. I think it's Wisconsin. Wisconsin exposes MSU bigtime.

    Ga Tech - Clemson:
Tech's only real win came against the worst team in the league. Heck, even Duke has better numbers than Notre Dame. Clemson blows them away.

    Cal Oregon:
Oregon has a chance to make a statement here. Their QB is tough. Hard to beat. I think his style gives the Cal defense fits and will prevail.
    Oregon.

    In other cool games:
Fl State loses to Bama, by 14 causing more calls for Bobby Bowden to resign.

Auburn covers the points against Florida.

    Penn St. destroys Illinois

Iowa St. give Nebraska a scare.

Notre Dame over Purdue. This will be ND's only chance at a win for a few weeks until the service academies come in. They will take advantage. Once they beat Purdue, they will immediately receive enough top 25 votes to be ranked.

Did you see where Weis said that he wasn't thinking about the pros and was staying at ND? Yeah, ya think? I mean, isn't every NFL team looking for a coach to totally destroy it's program?

    Have a great weekend everyone!

South Florida over WVU. You read it here last. :-)

Michigan State by 1. And I already blame Donovan.

    Clemson in a close one.

It's a tossup between these two. I pick Oregon in the upset.

Notre Dame 0-5, Purdue 5-0. Must look pretty sweet down in West Lafayette.

And with that win, Wisconsin should drop another two or three places in the poll ;-)

Right now, this is my top five:

    1. Cal
    2. tOSU
    3. USC
    4. LSU
    5. Boston College

I'm giving a lot of credit to teams with decent road wins, which all of these teams have, although LSU's win was the weakest. Kentucky is right up there for me and if Wisconsin goes to Illinois and wins next weekend, they'll pop up.
