  • College Football Picks - Week 14

       November 30, 2007

So here we are at last - the final weekend of a wacky college football season. When the dust settles, who will be playing in the National Championship Game and who will be whining on the sidelines? Let's find out!

#6 Virginia Tech vs. #12 Boston College: Some radio blowhard tried to claim that Virginia Tech was really the best team in college football "right now". I beg to differ. I think they just look better when they get to beat up on subpar ACC teams. Who doesn't? Boston College beat them once this year and I think they do it again. The pick: Boston College.

#14 Tennessee vs. #5 LSU: The Volunteers are just lucky enough that you can see them winning this game. However, LSU is just good enough that you could also see them winning this game in a rout. I'd actually rather be good than be lucky. The pick: LSU

Pittsburgh at #2 West Virginia: As the coach of the Bears, Dave Wannstedt gave me many happy Sundays. However, I don't think his team is up for giving us all a happy & chaotic Saturday. I think West Virginia knows what they have to do and they'll be focused and ready to go. The pick: West Virginia

#9 Oklahoma vs. #1 Missouri: Missouri surprised me last week with how well they played. However, I think it's one thing to be the challenger and quite another to excel in the role of champion. Missouri has no experience with that. They do, however, have experience getting beat by Oklahoma. I think they're going to relive that experience. The pick: Oklahoma.

So, that'd give us a National Championship Game between West Virginia and Ohio State. That's a little ho hum. I feel sorry for West Virginia. Everyone wants them to lose. It's not that we have anything against them, I think everyone just wants the chaos and controversy that would ensue.

Mizzou-OU should be a good game. I think the Tigers can take them.

Mizzou should have beat OU the first time they played. I hope they get it done this time.

Wow, the last week. OSU doesn't deserve a shot. Weak non conf, weak conference. Other teams are more deserving. Still, the chaos would be great. PLAYOFFS PLEASE!

Va Tech/BC: I don't know. I have been very unimpressed with BC and VaTech. I'm going with Va Tech to get revenge for the earlier squeaker loss.

    UT/LSU
2 choices. LSU is distracted knowing the Les will be going back to UM and plays like crap. Or LSU wants to send coach out happy. I can't help but think that the players feel a little let down, but I think they will want to show that Arkansas is a fluke. LSU wins, announces that Miles is UM bound and then hires a great coach to replace him. Everyone is happy, especially those of us UM fans.

    USC/UCLA:
USC wins. Don't know if they cover.

    Pitt/WVU:
Yeah Kris, I agree. WVU can taste the title game. They will be ready and able. Pitt gets dismantled.

    OU/Mizzou:
Mizzzou is flying. OU is great but I think that Mizzou wins, setting up a real cool championship game.

Take care, God Bless and have a good weekend.

Can Oregon implode any worse? Wow. Dixon was everything to that team. They are pathetic without him.

Anyone following the ESPN "Les is leaving for UM, no he's not, well he didn't state for certain, yes he did, well shoot we were right after all he's staying at LSU" debacle?

UM better get better for their search.

Congrats on winning the pool this season Kris. Almost had you, but Hawaii and Mizzou let me down.

OSU in the championship game. Wonder who is going to shred them this year.

Hope Wisconsin does well for y'all.

I hope OSU, Michigan and Wisconsin all beat their SEC foes

I can dream, but in reality, Florida is going to pound us like a dog on a leg. Wisconsin is usually good for a bowl win. OSU is lucky to be there and I don't know whether or not they have the horses to run with LSU.

The B10 really stunk this year, I don't see us going any better than 3-5 in the bowls. Purdue and Penn State should deliver. Maybe Wisconsin, although Tennessee is awfully good.

Michigan State will get creamed by BC. Michigan will get killed by Florida. Indiana will lose to Ok St. Illinois will be lucky to keep it within 30 against USC. Ohio State will lose as well.

3-5 at best. I would like Wisconsin to win, but I doubt they will. 2-6 will probably be the tally.

Why do you think the Big Ten stinks, because the pundits say it does? The pundits have been dead wrong time after time this year, you know

This morning, some jackass was bitching about how USC got screwed because they got a "weak" opponent in Illinois. Said jackass even pretended not to know who Illinois QB Juice Williams was (he called him Juice Newton). The whole thing reminded me of how Wisconsin was once called the "worst team to ever play in the Rose Bowl". Coincidently, that worst team's Rose Bowl (the 1999 game vs. UCLA) is on ESPN Classic right now. Guess who won?

No, I base the thought that the big 10 sucks on results:

Michigan: Lost to App ST. Lost to Oregon. Managed to beat ND/East Mich.

Illinois: Only top non conf team they played beat them: Mizzou. Also played : W. Ill, Syracuse and Ball St.

Indiana: Indiana St? Akron, Ball ST. Toughest team? W. Mich. Lost to Mich St. Northwestern.

Wisconsin: Wonderful games against Wash St, Citadel, UNLV and N. Ill. The div 1 teams combined for 9 whole wins.

Penn St: ND, Temple, Fl. Int'l, Buffalo. Total wins: Walloping 13. Now I know ND is usually tough, but Temple, Fl int, Buffalo never have.

Iowa: Managed non conf wins against N. Ill and Syracuse, lost to Iowa State and West Mich.

Mich St: UAB, Pitt, BGU and N. Dame. Going in this was probably the best non conf schedule. Still, no ogres. Well, BGSU is a bowl team.

Purdue: Toledo, N. Dame, E. Ill, C. Mich.

Northwestern: Lost to Duke. Need we say more?

Basically, anytime the B10 had the nads to play a bowl sized opponent, they lost. For the most part they played pansies and lost to too many of them.

A quick scan of say the Pac 10:

Az St: Beat Colorado, SJSU and SDSU. Colorado is bowl bound, the 2 SU's have more wins than most teams B10 teams played.

USC: Idaho, Nebraska and ND. I know Nebraska isn't that much, but they usually are a decent team and are still better than the crap some of our teams lost to.

    Cal beat Tennesses and Oregon.

    Oregon beat Michigan

    Quick scan of SEC:

Georgia beat Ok St and Ga Tech.
    Florida beat Fl St.
    Kentucky beat Louisville
    LSU wasted Va Tech.

I could go on, but you get my drift, even if you disagree with it. Only one team in our conference can point to a win over a bowl bound team.

As is usually the case, we'll get chewed up in the bowls. Wisconsin and Penn st and probably Purdue delivering a wins and the rest getting tore apart.

Ok, I stand corrected. We have 2 opponents in bowl games and did manage a win over a bowl bound team. Purdue beat that powerhouse Central Michigan, whom they have to play again and will beat again in the bowl. Still, I think an objective look at the big 10, based on this seasons non conf games and last seasons bowl games shows a weakness.

It won't last long. We're down, we'll get back up.

Just like basketball. We were decimated yet again by the ACC in the ACC/B10 challenge. We'll get better and maybe even win that challenge once.
