       April 08, 2010

Our Wisconsin Badgers start play in the Frozen Four today (4 pm Central Time, thanks NCAA)! Here are a couple videos to get your blood pumping!

I wish I could audio or video of the classic "water bottle fight" between Wisconsin and North Dakota (that's the one where the ND announcer, talking about a Wisconsin fan, immortally said that he'd like to "bop that bozo").

So if Wisconsin wins it'll be a year where "classic" programs all won the NCAAs: Alabama in football, Duke in BB and Wisconsin in hockey. So, it occurs to me, are we the Duke of hockey? By that, I mean are we the team the rest of the country hates?

I don't think so, but obviously I'm biased. I assume that "Duke" is either Minnesota, Michigan or Boston College, right?

First congrats on Wisconsin's year. Runner up is pretty darned good.

To answer the question, yeah, I think we're still the hated ones. I think it's more of a historical hate, since you have won more championships since 1980 (4: 81, 83, 90, 06) than we have (2: 96, 98) and there are many other teams that have as many or more than us since 1980. N. Dakota has 5, Lake Superior State 3, BC 3, Boston U 2, MSU 2, Denver 2, Maine 2.

I think we're still most hated because we have the most since college hockey began and we remind people of that when ever we can (although most of ours came pre-1960) and let's face it, we're arrogant. Yep, we own that. We get more yap out of so little actual recent output that people get sick of us. We're like that little yappy min-pin down the road. Doesn't do much but makes a shit load of noise. So yeah, we get the hateraid poured on us all the time.

Wisconsin and their fans are just too darned nice to hate. And I mean that in all respectfulness and sincerity. Ohio State? Hate 'em. MSU? Easy to hate. Heck, Northwestern is easier to hate than Wisconsin. Even when you destroy us, you don't get all uppity or nasty so people cant hate you. So maybe in that light, you could be the Duke of Hockey. Since you have more champs than most people do and people don't hate you. Out here people hate UNC with a passion. Way more than Duke.

The great thing is that in college hockey the greatness ebbs and flows. BC is on top with Wisc this year, but next year, 2 new ones will be in the final 2. And so on and so on.

It's funny, I was moaning and whining for a week when Michigan had the game winner in OT called off because the ref lost sight of the puck (but still, you have to overcome that). However, even if we had beaten Miami, I don't think we would have beaten BC. They were freaking fast and their shooters were incredible. They looked like pros against college players out there in the tourney. Just plain dominant. They would have shredded us up like cheese on a taco. So, tip your hat to them and get 'em next year.

Oh, and when did they name a college after Benji the dog??? Bemidji State?

    Sorry couldn't resist.

And the other cool thing about college sports is finding new colleges. Never knew of Lake Superior State or Boston University (BC yes, BU no) or Rensselaer (1954, 1985 champs) until college hockey.
